The student is able to:
  • Describe basic anatomic structures of the neural system;
  • Describe basic physiological mechanisms of the neural system;
  • Perform basic electroencephalogram (EEG) analyses;
  • Perform calculations on simple electro-magnetic (EM) fields;
  • Explain how (groups of) neurons generate EM fields;
  • Describe the physical principles behind NMR and MRI (nuclear spin detection);
  • Perform basic analysis to generate MRI images using field gradients•    Critically judge the design and results of published research;
  • Use appropriate frequency measures to describe a disease;
  • Calculate appropriate association measures that fit to a research design;
  • Collect data in a structured manner;
  • Use descriptive statistics to characterize a data set in SPSS.
  • Apply univariate statistical analyses like t-test or chi-squared
In this module we will look at 2 cases where patients with (suspected) epilspsy contacted a neurologist. We will focus on diagnosis and treatment from various perspectives: anatomy/MRI; Neurofysiology, epidemiology/ statistics, MRI and fysics. How is the problem diagnosed, how specific is a diagnosis and how certain? To answer such questions, this module provides basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the neural system  How is the brain structured and how does it function? In addition, several techniques to investigate the neural system are introduced, like EEG, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electromyography (EMG). Active brain cells induce electromagnetic (EM) fields that can be measured. This module therefore covers the basic physics of EM fields, as summarized in Maxwell’s laws. To determine whether observed EEG differences can be applied in diagnostic tools, basic techniques from statistics and epidemiology are introduced for study design, and to analyze the results. These themes are combined in the project, which focusses on diagnosis and treatment of a patients neurological problem, and will culminate in a poster presentation..
