The workshops organized by the language center can be integrated to the structure of social science for semester. The workshops are divided into two parts.
By the end of the first part, the students will know how to:
- Use academic databases.
- Perform a systematic literature search .
- Create a simple search strategy.
- Evaluate their search results and sources.
- Properly reference.
- Use a reference manager.
By the end of the second part of the workshops, the students will develop and improve their reading and writing skills. Students will know how to:
- Analyse structural and paragraphing conventions.
- Identify the features of cohesive, clear and coherent writing.
- Identify the stylistic features of academic writing.
- Prewrite and use outlines.
- drafting, revising for coherence and cohesion, and editing for clarity and academic style.

This series of workshops is designed to provide a foundation in academic writing for first-year students in UCT to prepare them to write academic texts in their courses and in the semester project. The workshops emphasize structural elements of academic writing to ensure that students can communicate coherently and cohesively.
