Aims
The student is able:
  1. to solve a clinically relevant problem in the digestive system using the ‘TM approach’;
  2. to integrate the obtained knowledge of the anatomy, (patho)physiology and insight in technique (i.e. endoscopy and ultrasound) in the solution of a clinically relevant problem in the digestive system;
  3. to understand the core aspects of vector analysis and gain insight in medically relevant vector fields;
  4. to conduct a full consultation and to reflect on his own development;
  5. to perform anamnesis and physical examination of the digestive system;
  6. to apply academic skills in reading and searching of scientific literature and writing a scientific report.
Content
Patient case
A problem with regard to pathology in the digestive system will be studied in groups. Knowledge and insight from other module components must be integrated in the project to investigate the current way of diagnosis and treatment. Finally, an advice for an innovative diagnosis and / or treatment is given in a scientific report.

Academic Skills
The student will learn skills that can be applied during the project and are assessed in the project report. Topics that will be discussed are: reading strategies, critical reading, searching and reviewing scientific literature, referencing and structuring texts. This theme is part of the academic skills learning path that is spread over the entire Bachelor's curriculum.

Anatomy
An in-depth insight is gained into the embryology and anatomy of the digestive system. Connections are made to knowledge obtained in the first year. Up-to-date understanding of the mesentery is gained, based on recent literature. The theoretical knowledge is converted into three-dimensional insight during the cutting room practical. Furthermore, the link with imaging (especially ultrasound), pathology and clinical practice is made.

(Patho)physiology
Insight into the physiology of the digestive system is essential to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases. Based on the insight into the normal functioning of the digestive system, the TM student learns what consequences various diseases may have on the function of the digestive system. In the theme pathology, disorders of intestinal motility, oncology and inflammation are discussed. The acquired insights can be applied by the student in the project.

Ultrasound
A start will be made with the imaging learning path within the curriculum from a diagnostic perspective. Concepts from the first year to describe a linear system are applied and supplemented to characterise diagnostic imaging systems. Firstly, this application takes place in ultrasonography where attention is paid to the generation, propagation and detection of mechanical waves. The information that can be derived from the detected waves about the transport medium (human body) is important. The system approach is continued in module 6.

Endoscopy
The technical aspects of an endoscope will be discussed, such as a picture by a lens system, magnification, resolution, and depth of field so that the student can calculate and / or design a system himself. There is one introductory lecture after which the student is expected to do the self-studies for the subsequent tutorial. The tutorials are used to actively complete a limited number of assignments.

Vector analysis
In medical physics, various phenomena occur that can be analysed as vector fields. Some examples are the electric field caused by heart and brain activity, the magnetic field in an MRI device, or the optimal navigational route during an operation. As a follow-up to the field of space mathematics, vector analysis deals with the mathematics of vectors and vector fields, so that the TM student gains insight into the analysis of medically relevant vector fields.

Communication and professional behaviour 2
An adequate relation to patients and to colleagues of their own and other disciplines is expected from the future Technical Physician. The skills acquired in the first year are extended with the second and third phase of a medical consultation: the anamnesis, physical examination and management. In addition to communicative skills, physical examination and transfer will also play an important role. Communication and professional behaviour 2 continues in Module 6.

Physical Examination
After an introduction about the physical examination of the gastrointestinal tract, the physical examination is practiced in small groups. This knowledge will be used in among others Communication and professional behaviour 2.
