Inhoud
To know and understand one’s inner drive, attitude and ideals is a great good for each engineer. It helps to understand what role you can have in society and what makes you special in that role. It is the starting point for developing a personal vision about socially relevant topics in the complex reality we live in. In this course, you learn how to create a short documentary (10-15 min) that conveys more than written texts could do, with a personal vision on a socially relevant topic. Creating such a layered visual story for a general audience is a way to reflect on your work as an engineer.
This course consists of four assignments:

I. Define your Theme: a topic of personal interest related to your attitude or ideals as an engineer in the real world.
Starting from your personal motivation you develop a personal question. You explore that question from various perspectives of the real-world (e.g. politics, psychological, environmental/sustainability, social, economic, philosophical/ethical) by means of information sources, existing documentaries, other media and literature, and by doing expert interviews. You learn to recognize documentary types and choose a type suitable to your theme. At
the end you will choose your documentary idea consisting of a logline, a clear conflict and an interesting and teasing guiding question that may serve as the basis for your storyline.

II. Write a Plan in which you specify how you want to visualise your idea. Who, what and where will you film? What will be your possible story and from whose perspective? How you plan to work with images and sounds. How is this plan related to your Personal Motivation?

III. Realize a short documentary (10-15 min) by elaborating your storyline, doing interviews, gathering specific information that will be useful for your story, shooting your own video, gathering footage of others available on the internet. If necessary you will develop and record a voice-over text, and gather music and other audio. By means of editing software you will edit the documentary. You create promotion material that presents your film in an attractive way to possible audiences. Your documentary will be presented on the big screen to your mentors and peers. At the screening days, you will share your viewing experiences and give feedback to your peers.

IV. Write a reflection on your work and working process.

Assessment
Theme report   (40%)
Plan (pass/fail)
Documentary  (55%)
Reflection report  (5%)

The Plan is assessed with pass or fail. No pass for the Plan at the screening date leads to 1 point reduction on the final grade. The sum of all weighted-grades results in the overall grade of the course. A final grade of at least 5.5 completes this course.

DP provides an opportunity to improve all deliverables except Reflection report. However, improving the Documentary deliverable results in a maximum deliverable grade of 6.0.
