Aims
  • Students have a basic understanding of the concepts and approaches of policy studies.
  • Students are able to apply these approaches to simple examples aimed at behavioural change.
  • Students are able to describe the converging technologies revolution with a focus on health technologies and identify the ethical issues that come with it.
  • Students are able to design a basic policy solution to a health problem in which technologies in combination with societal factors play a role in shaping behavior.
  • Students are able to write a policy memorandum containing a policy proposal.
Content
The module contains a component (policy, behaviour and technology) that teaches students the core concepts of and the main approaches to policy studies. These concepts and approaches stem from policy studies as a specific (inter)discipline and from the main disciplines in public administration. Teaching is organized along the line of different stages in the policy process: policy formation, policy implementation and policy evaluation. This part will focus on the relation between policy, (health) technology and (healthy) behaviour.

The module contains a project on health interventions. Students design a policy that is aimed at improving health behavior using technological and other interventions. Groups of students use a number of methods for policy analysis in designing a policy. These include methods for problem analysis, methods for generation and evaluation of policy solutions. The specific design aspects of the policy proposals are taught in a separate module component (policy design), were students individually develop a single policy intervention. The final result is a policy memorandum, containing an integrated policy advice. Specific skills needed for group work and to give (written) policy advice are part of the project.
