Aims
After finishing this course, the student can:
  1. Explain and reflect on the relationships between behaviour change, technology and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  2. Identify, apply and combine theories from different disciplines - such as psychology, public administration and communication sciences - to explain a specific form of behaviour.
  3. Visualize and concisely describe the interrelationship(s) between the micro, meso, and macro factors and a specific form of behaviour.
  4. Describe how micro-, meso-, and macro-level factors that can explain and/or change a specific form of behaviour can be measured with different types of technologies.
  5. Write an interdisciplinary report integrating micro-, meso-, and macro-level factors that can explain and/or change a specific form of behaviour and is able to do that for practice and academic audiences
  6. Present interdisciplinary work that integrates micro-, meso-, and macro-level factors that can explain and/or change a specific form of behaviour in a clear manner
Reflect on their role in an interdisciplinary team and how their background can contribute to  interdisciplinary work
Content

Our daily lives are intertwined with technology, such as laptops, smartphones or smartwatches. These technologies can support us in almost all activities: studying, keeping in touch with family and friends, or tracking your steps per day to remain as active as possible. However, the omnipresence of technology can also have negative impact, such as effects of social media on self-image or sitting behind one's laptop for too long. In other words: there is a complex relationship between our behaviour and technology. In this course, we will dive into this interrelationship and explore how we can explain and change behaviour through technology on a micro, meso and macro level.

This interdisciplinary course consists of two different challenges, focused on explaining behaviour and changing behaviour using technology. Both challenges have in common that a specific type of behaviour will be studied by focusing on real-life challenges through an interdisciplinary, multi-level lens. As a Master student, you will contribute to each project with your own disciplinary expertise, but also dive into other disciplines, such as communication science, public administration, or psychology. You will work on the challenges in interdisciplinary groups of four to five students.

This course offers a unique opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills in explaining and changing behaviour from your own and other related fields of expertise, to understand and apply technological interventions, and to work on real-life challenges in an interdisciplinary team. This ensures you will develop skills relevant in the job field, where critical thinking and collaborating within an interdisciplinary team are critical.
