Upon successful completion of this minor, students should be able to:
- Describe activities of detail design phase and their impacts on each other
- Apply activities of detail design phase and best practices to the real products to produce a complete and precise physical description of their parts for manufacturing and assembly.
- Apply activities of material and manufacturing process selection and best practices to the products.
- Evaluate the results of applying product development activities and best practices to the products, and reflect on them
- Create and implement a personal pursuit project.

Product Development Minor (PDM) helps you gain knowledge and get hands on experience of the systematic product development approaches to deliver competitive products in the market. PDM is open to students of Student Teams Twente to enable them to take their products to another level.
Each year, limited spaces are allocated to all other students who are ready to take up a technical challenge during their studies. These students work on a challenging product design and development task focusing on biomechanical devices. First Come, First Serve!
Our society is constantly confronting major challenges in the fields of Health, Energy, Transportation, Automation, and so on. To address these challenges, the UT Student Teams are putting a great deal of effort to design and develop innovative products/services/systems that are based on multidisciplinary approaches in cooperation with different societal stakeholders. To professionalize and increase these processes performance, the Student Teams can benefit from systematic product development approaches, and deliver more competitive results, which better comply with the society and stakeholders’ requirements. For the students other than those in Student teams, the product is specifically defined by the minor coordinator for the Health sector, with the focus on biomechanical devices, such as orthoses design, human body prototyping, and surgical device design.
This 15EC minor focuses on the detailed design phase of product design and development. This phase takes the product design concepts and defines the complete specification such as geometry, materials, and tolerances of all the parts through the provision of detail drawings and assembly drawings. It also includes selection of materials (e.g. composite), manufacturing processes (e.g. injection molding and 3D printing), and machine tools (e.g. CNC machines). The result of detailed design phase is the complete and precise physical description of all the parts of the products, which are then issued to the manufacturing companies for precise manufacture and assembly.
The minor is hosted by DesignLab and embedded under the examination board of Mechanical Engineering. It is a one-year program starting from quartile 1A of the first intake of the academic year. The minor is composed of 5EC of core educational activities, and the remaining 10EC relate to a personal pursuit project aligned with the product development related learning objectives the students are pursuing as Student Teams’ members and in line with biomechanical product design for all other students.
The core educational activities include the theoretical topics about the product development, and are delivered in the first three months (quartile 1A). Included in the education is elective content aiming at providing the flexibility to accommodate the different interests from the diverse students and the various roles played by the students. The following core topics are offered within the minor:
- Detail design (1.5EC—compulsory): this topic focuses on the detail design phase of product design and development to define the complete specification of the geometry, materials, and tolerances of parts through the provision of detail drawings and assembly drawings, which can be issued to the manufacturing companies for precise manufacture and assembly.
- Materials and manufacturing processes + workshops (2.5EC—compulsory): this topic is about material and their manufacturability as well as manufacturing processes and their capability for processing materials. It also includes material and manufacturing process selection for a part.
- Design for machining (0.5EC—elective): this topic provides guidelines for designing parts for machining.
- Design for additive manufacturing (0.5EC—elective): this topic provides guidelines for designing parts for additive manufacturing.
- Design for injection moulding (0.5EC—elective): this topic provides guidelines for designing parts for injection moulding.
Topics 1 and 2 are compulsory, with total of 4EC (out of 5EC). To gain the remaining 1EC, the students must choose two topics out of topics 3, 4 and 5.
For the personal pursuit project,
- Students from the Student Teams: the students carry out a project aligned with their task in their teams and achieve their defined learning objectives. Students have until the end of the academic year to deliver the personal pursuit project. The students should take the following steps:
- Define a project aligned with their task in their Student Team, or the team working on the biomechanical product design
- Define the learning objectives to be achieved by performing the project
- Suggest at least two staff members that would fit as advisor for the proposed project. The students must have at least one UT staff member as their advisor. External advisors are also possible and welcome as long as you have a UT advisor.
The minor coordinator assigns a staff member as an advisor. The coordinator together with the advisor evaluate the plan and assess its feasibility and alignment with the minor objectives. Once approved, the students will be guided by the assigned advisor throughout the project and in acquiring further knowledge and skills needed to complete the project.
- Students not from the Student Teams: the project can be specifically defined by the teams aligned with their needs and product development theme, or the minor coordinator for the Health sector, with the focus on biomechanical devices, such as orthoses design, human body prototyping, and surgical device design. Students have until the end of the academic year to deliver the personal pursuit project. The students who want to carry out the project for the Students Teams must complete the following steps:
- Find a team that can offer you a 10EC project
- Define the 10EC project together with the respective team
- Contact the minor coordinator via email to express your interest in enrolling in the minor and send the project definition. If your request is approved, you will be enrolled in the minor and will be notified.
Minor assessment
The assessment of the 5EC course is project-based. The students must submit written report/presentation as evidence of applying the knowledge acquired in the course. The deadline for producing the evidence is within quartile 1A.
The assessment of the personal pursuit project is done by the project advisor and minor coordinator and is based on the project work and evidence for achievement of the learning objectives and on the reflection on the work done. The students must submit written report/presentation as evidence by the end of the academic year.
Final grade weighting: 33% for the core educational activities and 67% for the personal pursuit project.
Application procedure: inform the minor coordinator, Athena Jalalian, via email at a.jalalian@utwente.nl about your decision on the enrollment in the minor. The coordinator will inform you of the approval/disapproval of your application via email.
