- Understand current trends in the communication profession and their relations with societal developments, translated into an opinion statement about the dynamics within the professional field (4.2);
- Prepare a guide for a conversation with professionals about the state and development of the professional field, including propositions and questions (6.3);
- Have an overview of the labour market of master students Communication Science (6.3);
- Position themselves as a communication professional (6.3);
- Interact professionally and effectively with representatives from the professional field (4.1);
- Execute a small-scale study using the focus group technique and the Q-sort technique (2.3);
- Demonstrate receptiveness to feedback in an adequate way (4.9);
- Reflect on their own competencies and professional actions (4.9);
- Design a podcast that addresses a topic in-depth for a targeted audience (4.4);
- Formulate their expected professional added value to the field and society as a whole (6.1).

For the Communication Science programme, the connection between the bachelor- and master programme with the professional field is very important. We believe that our bachelor students should be able to make a balanced decision concerning their subsequent master direction, based on information and gathered impressions of their future professional field. Students need to create awareness of what to expect when entering the labour market and what typical positions are of communication science alumni. But also, what particular aspects of the professional field are of interest to the student, and how to prepare for a smooth start of a professional career in terms of essential professional and / or soft skills.

In short, by means of a combination of reflections and active engagement with the field, this module will provide students with a better understanding of their professional life after their study, enabling students to make a cultivated decision for their master direction.
The module starts with an exploration of trends, societal developments and dynamics within the professional field (=part 1 of the module). In part 2 organizational life in practice is being investigated by means of company visits and interviews with master COM alumni. In part 3 students gain insight in their own abilities and skills using focus groups and the Q-sort techniques. These three parts come together in the final product of this module: a podcast on the professional field of communication science (=part 4).
