Bigger picture (rationale and aim):
Sport participation is increasing worldwide because of its health benefits. With the increase in wearable technology, assessment of performance (i.e. to track progression or to prevent injuries) is becoming an hot topic. The course will focus on models, methods and technologies to asses performance in sports from a biomechanical as well as exercise physiological point of view.
The course aims to give students an in-depth understanding of methods to asses performance and injury risks in sports.

Intended Learning Objectives
On successful completion of the course:
  • The student understands and is able to explain and differentiate the concepts capacity and performance in sports.
  • The student understands and is able to explain the relevant biomechanical and exercise physiological parameters related to performance and injury development.
  • The student understands the advantages and disadvantages of the different technologies available to assess performance in sports and knows how and when to apply them.
  • The student is able to apply inertial sensor technology to analyze human movement from a kinetic, kinematic and dynamic interaction perspective.
  • The student understands how and is able to collect and meaningfully interpret data associated with performance or injury risk.
  • The student knows how to use data analysis techniques to meaningfully data related to performance and injuries.
  • The student understands how to use data and how to apply data analysis techniques to evaluate performance and influence injury risk
The Intended Learning Outcomes will be assessed with a presentation during a colloquium and a report.
Course description:
This course will focus at different techniques and methods to assess performance and identify injury risk in sports. It will cover biomechanical and physiological variables that can be measured in the laboratory setting as well as in the real world. It will provide the basic principles of biomechanics as well as exercise physiology as well an elaborate discussion of how these can be measured as well as estimated using advanced laboratory systems as well as wearable equipment. Furthermore, it will discuss models to estimate optimal workload for performance enhancement and models for injury prevention. Novel data analysis techniques will be introduced and applied to single and multi-level data streams for cyclical as well as non-cyclical data. Students will have the theoretical background to asses performance in sports, know which technique to apply when and how, and know the data analysis techniques to analyze and meaningfully interpret data to benefit sports performance or decrease injury risk.
Topics that will be addressed are:
  • Principles of biomechanics and exercise physiology
  • Performance in a broader context. How does performance relate to capacity?
  • Movement analysis techniques for performance enhancement and injury prevention
  • Inertial sensor systems and wearable technology for movement analysis
  • Models for chronic versus acute work load
  • Models for injury risk estimation
  • Use of data science in sports and technology
There will be guest lectures on interaction technology in sports and the use of advanced data analysis techniques as well as the integration of other variables (e.g. psychological variables) by athletes/coaches to asses changes in performance and injury risk.

Teaching and learning activities
Interactive lectures and group projects will be used to reach the learning objectives. Lectures and practical courses will be used alternatively together with supervised and unsupervised self-study.
The lectures and practical course will be used to provide the required understanding of the key concepts and technologies to be used and to provide the theoretical framework (i.e for performance enhancement and prevention of injuries). In addition, guest lecturers who are experts in the field of interaction technology and data in sport will provide one or more lectures to provide the context necessary to understand the topic.
Students will work in project groups on a self-selected topic/sports related question and will address this question using sensor technology. Within the project they will have to apply the gained knowledge to analyse and evaluate the addressed topic.
