Aims
The minor module Experimental Methods in Mechanical Engineering (EMME) is designed for students in the UT-VU Bachelor Program ME. The purpose of the minor is to both deepen and broaden the knowledge that students obtained in the first two years of the BSc program. The regular BSc program contains only limited experimental work and UT-VU students only spend limited time in the Horst. By following the EMME minor module, students will obtain new knowledge in fields they have studied before and are introduced to topics within the ME domain that are not part of the BSc program.
This minor can not be found on the UT minor website. You have to enrol via the Canvas site https://canvas.utwente.nl/courses/1666 B3, minor information.

Content
The minor module Experimental Methods in Mechanical Engineering (EMME) is designed for students in the UT-VU Bachelor Program ME. It is intended for those students that are seriously considering following the Master Program ME at the UT once they have finished their Bachelor.

The minor EMME focusses on experimental methods in a variety of disciplines that have laboratories in the Horst. The module is designed such that it is complementary to the BSc and MSc programs and does not contain overlap with already existing courses.

The setup of the module is a personalized education method of the apprentice-journeyman-master model. After a general introduction to experimental methods, the group is divided in small groups of 4 students. Each group is connected to a staff member and given instruction and relevant theory before executing a series of experiments a laboratory. The groups follow a rotation scheme and visit 4 labs in a period of 10 weeks.

All five courses in the module are 3EC each. Each course is assessed by a written report on the preparation, execution and evaluation of the experiments and an oral exam.

Introduction to Experimental Methods (all staff)
  • Risk analysis and safety precautions in laboratories, general and lab specific
  • Preparing experiments, test and measurement plans, planning, error analysis

Experimental Methods in Acoustics (Ysbrand Wijnant + support)
  • Sound pressure levels, time and frequency domain, weighting filters
  • Microphones, intensity, absorption, reverberation time, sound level meters

Experimental Methods in Dynamics (Jurnan Schilder + support)
  • Vibrations and motions in the large
  • Accelerometer, impact hammer, shaker, laser-vibrometer, strain gauge

Experimental Methods in Materials Science (Martin Luckabauer + support)
  • Selecting and describing measurement techniques for determining material properties
  • Thermomechanical simulation, sample preparation, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction

Experimental Methods in Thermodynamics (Yashar Hajimolana + support)
  • Gas turbine, heat exchanger, pump, compressor, fuel cell, thermal storage
  • Measuring thermodynamic properties, improving power cycle performance
