Study unit “Graduation Project I” consists of two related study components “Academic Writing” and “Graduation Project I”. The aim for “Academic Writing” is to become proficient in performing a relevant literature study and writing academic papers. The “Graduation Project I” component is the first part of the Graduation Project. The aim is to acquire context information and in-depth knowledge of the problem domain, allowing the development of feasible concepts for a product/service appreciated and accepted by the stakeholders.

In “Academic Writing” students learn to:
  1. search for relevant scientific articles that would be used for the writing of academic articles/manuscripts
  2. prepare a literature matrix to effectively work with different information from various sources (e.g., articles published in peer-reviewed journals, books, government reports, professional journals)
  3. effectively use information from scientific articles for the writing of academic articles/manuscripts
  4. apply the conventions of source citation and referencing into their own academic articles/manuscripts
  5. apply the principles of academic writing to write a coherent and concise text; and prepare a literature review using various academic, scientific, and professional sources.
In “Graduation Project I” students learn to:
  1. work independent and systematic on a large design project
  2. apply knowledge and skills acquired during the Creative Technology program in an integrated manner
  3. autonomously develop and refine new knowledge and new skills
  4. perform research in an ethical manner
  5. apply academic principles to understand the research objective and methodology, and design project’s context
  6. define a research question based on background research
  7. construct the project’s design space based on stakeholder interaction(s)
  8. develop feasible concepts for a product/service idea
  9. involve stakeholders to (collaboratively) decide on a preferable concept
  10. transfer knowledge in a domain specific environment using appropriate communication modalities
Inhoud
Study unit “Graduation Project I” consists of two related study components “Academic Writing” and “Graduation Project I”. The topic of this "Graduation Project  I" provides the context of  the "Academic Writing" component.

CreaTe students complete their study in the third year with a Graduation Project (GP). The goal of this project is to produce an innovative solution for a posed design question (i.e., research question) that results in a positive effect on people (e.g., end-users, community members). Successful completion of a GP is the proof that the student can function as an independent Creative Technologist at an academic bachelor level. A student individually executes his/her GP, where context and goals are set by a client. Daily supervision is performed by a CreaTe lecturer assisted by a critical observer. The GP consists of two parts: GP I (module 11) and GP II (module12). The GP I goal for the student is to acquire context information and in-depth knowledge of the problem domain, allowing the development of feasible concepts for a product/service appreciated and accepted by the stakeholders. GP I forms the basis for GP II, in which the preferred concept is developed further into an ICT-based functional prototype of the product/service.

The Academic Writing component provides the academic knowledge and skills to perform the required GP literature research; e.g., search strategy for relevant (non-)scientific articles, use of a literature matrix to effectively work with different information from various sources, apply the conventions of source citation and referencing, and apply the principles of academic writing in order to write a coherent and concise text. Students will be expected to perform skill-building exercises during the different sessions. Writing tasks will also be given to provide participants the opportunity to practice and/or improve their writing skills.

Assessment
Academic Writing: report (100%)
Graduation Project I: thesis draft, presentation

AW provides an opportunity to improve an unsatisfactory report. Grade will be maximized to 6.0.
GP I has no repair option.
