- Analysis and Critical Thinking: Identify a socio-technical challenge and justify its relevance based on a thorough context research.
- Research and Information Skills: Gather and integrate information from different sources and academics, on the same topic, in order to communicate about the subject knowledgeably.
- Design: Explore and Reflect on a solution to a complex socio-technical challenge by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable challenges that can be solved through iterative design and engineering.
- Communication: Create informative/explanatory resources to communicate a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of content. Use relevant facts to support main ideas or themes; and organize them appropriately according to task, purpose, and audience.
- Teamwork and Self-Reflection: Work in open-ended projects by overcoming ambiguity and uncertainty with effective team and time management.

Objective
To acquire the basic skills to set-up and manage a design project for a relevant challenge by considering the interdependence of human, social, environmental, and technological factors.
Content
Throughout a systematic and iterative approach, you will learn to analyse, ideate, design, prototype, and evaluate a solution for a socio-technical challenge.
In order to achieve this, you will develop new skills and bring together different areas of knowledge, such as information and research methods, Design Thinking, Design Ethics, design prototyping, design visualisation and design sketching, and Responsible Research and Innovation.
Goals
- Identify a socio-technical challenge and conduct a Context Study to justify its relevance based on a thorough process of interdisciplinary research.
- Practice your skills in research and information, critical thinking, design sketching, communication, and teamwork.
- Develop a design concept informed by Design Ethics and Design Thinking Approach and highlight the social, technological, and environmental dimensions that were considered in the process of ideation.
- Present adaptations of your design concept to different audiences (peers, tutors, teachers, panel of experts) using different media (storytelling, concept board, written report, pitch, presentation).
- Deliver a final design and a comprehensive set of portfolios that account for your learning process and progress.
The project’s process will be a blended learning experience of interdisciplinary lectures, activities, and workshops.
