Recent developments in integrated water management aim at supporting sustainable development in a broad context. But how can the impacts of an organization on local water resources along global supply chains be measured? What can be done to reduce this footprint and how can interactions with other environmental aspects, like climate and land, be quantified to support decision making?
This course will show important milestones in sustainable development with a particular focus on SDG6 “Clean Water and Sanitation”. To reveal the contribution of organizations to this SDG, recent developments in organizational water footprinting are introduced along with suitable mitigation measures. As impacts on water should be considered in combination with other environmental aspects, the method of Life Cycle Assessment is presented along with recent developments to account for water use and associated local impacts. Finally, the increasing use of Life Cycle Assessment in practice and legislation is discussed.
