After passing the course, the student can:
- understand several methods for trend analysis and future prediction
- apply three different methods to write future scenarios
- design and present future contexts, based on scenario plots
- design a product, product range, product-service system or product context, based on a future scenario
- evaluate a designed future product or product range for its appropriateness in different future scenarios

INTRODUCTION
In the course "Create the Future" the student learns to write and present future scenario's. Based on one or more of these scenario's a product, product range, product-service system or product context for the future is developed. The aim of the course is to develop a long term view, for instance for over fifteen or twenty years, on such a product or product-service system.
CONTENT
The course starts with a series of lectures about future studies and how to use existing research and information to write future scenarios. The methodology is based on scenario methods developed to inform strategy making within firms and facilitate collective decision making. After this introduction one or more scenarios have to be written. Based on one of these a product is designed. This product does not have to be worked out in detail, but it must be made plausible that it can work.
RELATION TO OTHER COURSES
Create the Future is the last course in a series of courses on Human Technology Relations. Science &Technology Studies is a course from the Philosophy of Technology master which introduces the Industrial Designer into theories of Society-Technology relations. In other words, it tries to explain how society is influenced by technological developments and vice versa; how technology is also shaped by societal developments. In the course Design Histories, the relations between people and technology and artefacts are studied from a historical perspective. Alongside the development of different styles, the development of the ideas and ideals within the design community are studied and also the development of the profession of the designer is taken into account. The course Scenario Based Product design is targeted on actively researching human technology relations in practice. In this course, several methods on user centered design and user participation in design are studied and taken into practice. In the last course of this series, Create the Future, an effort has to be made to develop a product for the longer term, e.g. fifteen to twenty years, in a project where all the previous aspects are taken into account.
