Inhoud
This study unit will approach the theme of the module – the “quantified self” – from the perspectives of moral philosophy, philosophy of language, and philosophy of technology. The starting point are the questions whether lying is always morally wrong, and what, morally speaking, distinguishes lying from other forms of communication. This question leads into general philosophical questions about truth and the purpose of communication, the role of technology in data collection and communication, and a reflection on the socio-political context in which this technology operates. The theory study unit is organized in three thematic blocks: (1) Data, Self, and Society – reflecting on communication and technology as political tools; (2) Ethics of Lying – introducing moral theories; and (3) Theories of Truth – introducing philosophy of language and philosophy of technology. The theory study unit is designed to give students a general introduction to philosophical theories and concepts while focusing on issues and examples relevant to (future) communication professionals, and considering the impact of contemporary technology and its socio-political context. The acquired theoretical knowledge and insights will serve as input for the Project and Skills, and will be tested through an individual take home exam (8T1).

This study unit is part of the Communication science module The quantified self. Because the four study units, which are part of the module, are highly related to each other it is not possible to follow this study unit separately.
