Aims
At the end of the study unit, students will be able to… (between brackets the number of the corresponding intended learning qualification of the programme):
  1. develop an evidence based persuasive design intervention with the use of theories and frameworks (1.2, 1.4, 4.5);
  2. analyse the context to identify opportunities for design-inspired interventions (2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3);
  3. evaluate the effectiveness of a design intervention (2.4, 2.5)
  4. write a scientific report documenting the results of the evaluation (2.5, 2.6);
  5. work in a project team (4.6, 4.7. 4.8, 4.9).

Content
This study unit prepares students for a job after study as a researcher, consultant, digital marketer, digital designer, or creative content developer. Core of the Project is testing the effects of a self-designed persuasive (VR) environment (7S1) aimed at promoting a more sustainable and healthier lifestyle. Following the different stages in the design process, the Project consists of 3 parts:
  1. Developing a persuasive design intervention in VR: By taking an evidence-based design approach, students will first explore literature that explains how VR environments can be helpful to enhance a sustainable and healthy lifestyle. Virtual reality offers a useful tool for creating immersive, multisensory environments. What motivates (and de-motivates) people to make sustainable choices or to be more active and exercise better? Which mental states are important to restore from mental fatigue in a natural green environment? How does presence in a virtual environment predict social connectedness?
  2. Test a prototype of the VR intervention: In this stage students, based on the skills gained in the Research study unit, will test and report the effectiveness of their persuasive design intervention in an experiment.
  3. Project reporting: To finalize the Project, students will report their findings in a scientific article following all the steps of academic reporting (7P1), and present their work as a poster presentation at a scientific conference (7P2).

This study unit is part of the Communication science module Persuasive design. Because the four study units, which are part of the module, are highly related to each other it is not possible to follow this study unit separately.
