At the end of the course, students will be able to (between brackets the number of the corresponding intended learning qualification of the programme):
- explain the origins and purposes of the grounded theory approach (2.1);
- analyze the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative interviews in comparison to other methods (2.1);
- characterize the essence of the qualitative data collection methods that are most often used in organizational research (2.1);
- develop a well-designed interview guideline with relevant topics, as well as open-ended and neutral questions (2.2, 2.3);
- identify the relevant sources of bias during qualitative data analysis as well as common strategies to limit such biases (2.4);
- evaluate the quality of qualitative research using interviews (2.5).
In this course, students learn how to perform in-depth interviews, analyze the qualitative data using the software package Atlas-ti, and report the outcomes of these interviews professionally. Students get acquainted with the fundamentals of qualitative research, interview techniques, and data-analysis methods. Each group creates one combined interview guide or topic list, as well as a sampling strategy (6R1). Subsequently, each team member performs at least two in-depth interviews, so that rich and a large amount of information is gathered. Students’ knowledge of the commons features and terminology of qualitative research is assessed through an individual research exam with open questions (6R2).|
This study unit is part of the Communication science module Lead the change. Because the four courses, which are part of the module, are highly related to each other it is not possible to follow this study unit separately.
