At the end of the study unit, students will be able to (between brackets the number of the corresponding intended learning qualification of the programme):
- analyze how current developments in society influence organizational communication processes (1.1, 1.3, 3.1, 6.1);
- investigate individual perceptions and organizational processes in a qualitative research project to improve organizational communication (2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.2, 4.2);
- develop a practical vision to optimize communication processes in modern organizations (1.3, 3,3, 5.2);
- write a clear and concise consultancy report about their qualitative research project, taking the audience into account (2.5, 2.6, 3.6);
- write a management summary together with research highlights to derive the essence of their research project for business communication (2.6, 3.6);
- operate in a small research team and evaluate the effectiveness of the team and their own role within the team (4.6, 4.7, 4.9, 6.2).
In this study unit, students learn how to offer managers advice on organizational communication topics, based on both literature and empirical data. They perform a qualitative study in a small-scale project group. In-depth interviews are conducted within a knowledge-intensive organization. The overall focus is on how the world of work is changing by technology and what this means for managers and employees. The first project assignment is a consultancy report (6P1) in which students present their expert findings on a recent and relevant organizational communication topic. This report contains an overview of the research area, explanation of how the research was conducted, illustration of the most important findings, and interpretation of the societal or practical relevance. Students demonstrate how a practical question arising from an unexplained organizational communication phenomenon can deepen our understanding of the changing work environment. Subsequently, each project group writes a management summary together with research highlights to show the essence of their project (6P2). Both the consultancy report and the management summary form the input for a professional workshop (6S2). Finally, students reflect in detail on critical incidents of their group work, from an individual and a group perspective (6P3). They describe specific incidents, either positive or negative, and tell their story about how it affected the project work.|
This study unit is part of the Communication science module Lead the change. Because the four study unit, which are part of the module, are highly related to each other it is not possible to follow this study unit separately.
