In the personal internship development plan, students formulate their own learning goals along the following lines:
- Develop a working knowledge in the operationalization of the profile expertise ;
- Learn new practical skills and gain confidence in entrepreneurial and professional settings;
- Practice communication and teamwork skills;
- Establish a network of professionals;
- Boost their career prospects;
- Become a more motivated life-long learner.
The process of the search for the internship is predominantly the student’s own responsibility. The student discusses their plan with the UCT semester coordinator to check academic and professional content, level, and fit with the semester goals. When the plan is concrete, the student contacts the ITC internship coordinator for practical matters.

The internship is defined as a credit-bearing experiential activity in a professional work environment. In the internship, the student demonstrates the ability to work at an academic level in a professional project context, integrating knowledge and theory with practical applications and skill development in a host organization. As such, an internship is an opportunity for developing professional competences related to the profile as a new engineer. The student can use an internship to explore the professional setting of the profile and the working career as new engineer.
The internship may be carried out within companies, government agencies, research institutes, NGOs or intergovernmental organizations in the Netherlands or abroad. During the internship, the student receives guidance from a daily supervisor in the organization concerned. A member of the UCT staff who has affinity with the area of the internship topic will be assigned as UCT internship supervisor.
