This course is aimed for students enrolled in the Master of Chemical Science & Engineering.
The course is organized as 7 online lectures and 4 Aspen Plus based assignments. There are some reference materials referred to as the source for Aspen Plus software.
The theory deals with the following topics:
- Emissions in the chemical industry and the production of primary chemicals.
- Sustainable approach for the production of primary chemicals.
- Biomass processing and its role in the green future.
- Plastics production and recycling toward a close-loop economy.
During the course, student will be introduced to the software Aspen Plus and will have to go through some basic assignments before being able to participate in the final assignment, which is based on a flowsheet of a process for sustainable production of chemicals.
The final assignment is individual and includes:
- Development of an alternative production process for a specified chemical based on a renewable or a circular feedstock.
- The description of this flowsheet
- The simulation of this flowsheet in a commercial flowsheeter (Aspen Plus).
- Analysis of the results with focus on sustainability criteria as for instance carbon efficiency, energy efficiency, emissions per amount of product etc.
The student has to submit a report discussing their simulation, assumptions, specifications and results. They also need to submit their Aspen Plus files. The final mark is based on the oral evalution, the report and the simulations.

This course deals with the emissions associated with the production of chemicals through conventional (fossil fuel-based) methods, and the sustainable approach to replace their production. During the course, the route for the production of the most important chemicals in the industry will be investigated. The advantages and the bottlenecks in the sustainable production of chemicals will be studied to identify future development possibilities. At the end of the course we expect students to be able to synthesis alternative production processes, to simulate this process with the flowsheeting tools available (e.g. Aspen Plus). A thermodynamic correct description of the different phase equilibria is critical for an adequate description of the process.
