Cursusdoelen
Upon completion of this course the student is able to:
  • have insight in the nature and practice of mathematical research and mathematical modelling,
  • assess the quality of products and processes of scientific research
  • explain how a problem is translated into mathematics and how a mathematical solution is translated back to societal reality,
  • explain the importance (and limitations) of mathematical analysis with respect to societal issues.
Inhoud
Twente engineers are aware of the societal and human context of technology. Acquiring insight into the nature and value of applied mathematics contributes to this. In particular, you acquire insight into the way this mathematical translation works and learn how to assess the value of mathematical research for society.
This course is a follow-up on Reflection on Mathematical Research I. In the current course you use the tools from the part I on a case mathematics in society, plus the brief reflection upon the mathematics in your own bachelor’s assignment.

Voorkennis
Students may only participate in these study units once they have passed the study unit Reflection on Mathematical Research I (202001373).
