After successful completion of Reflection on Mathematical Research I the student
- has insight into the nature and practice of mathematical research and mathematical modelling.
- is able to assess the quality of products and processes of scientific research
- can explain how a problem is translated into mathematics and how a mathematical solution is translated back to societal reality
- is able to explain the importance (and limitations) of mathematical analysis with respect to societal issues
- can set up and perform a search for scientific literature on a mathematical topic

The course Reflection on Mathematical Research I starts with introductory lectures on the historical and philosophical background of mathematical models. In these lectures general conceptual tools for the analysis of literature and cases are provided as well as a general historical and philosophical background to think about the nature and role of mathematical modelling. The student also starts with a review of the literature and the setup of a research plan. These latter two components mark the start of the bachelor’s assignment. Furthermore, there will be a lecture on information skills. The students will learn how to set up a search strategy and perform a systematic search for scientific literature. They will write a short search report according to the provided guidelines and discuss this with the information specialist for EEMCS Samuel Mok. Students need to earn a pass for this part before the result for Reflection on Mathematical Research I will be registered in Osiris.
