
After successful completion of Reflection on Mathematical Research I the student
 has insight into the nature and practice of mathematical research and mathematical modelling.

The course Reflection on Mathematical Research I starts with introductory lectures on the historical and philosophical background of mathematical models. In these lectures general conceptual tools for the analysis of literature and cases are provided as well as a general historical and philosophical background to think about the nature and role of mathematical modelling. The student also starts with a review of the literature and the setup of a research plan. These latter two components mark the start of the bachelorâ€™s assignment. Furthermore, there will be a lecture on information skills. The students will learn how to set up a search strategy and perform a systematic search for scientific literature. They will need to keep a log of all their searches and discuss this with the information specialist Marco van Veller. Students need to earn a pass for this part before the result for Reflection on Mathematical Research I will be registered in Osiris.
