Cursusdoelen
After taking this course, students will be able to
  • Apply insights from epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy to identify a fitting case or a knowledge gap in the current literature,
  • Identify relevant literature to address the identified challenge, and
  • Produce an outline for a philosophical research paper.
Inhoud
This fifth and sixth quartile are dedicated to your Individual Project.
You are granted a great deal of freedom in choosing a subject, but the result should be a final paper that can meet the standards of a professional publication. You may choose to write an application-oriented paper about any (ethical, scientific, societal, political…) issue that you wish to analyse and evaluate philosophically. Or you may focus on analysing a philosophical text or debate.
In the fifth quartile of your philosophical studies, we will focus on drafting an outline of the paper, which includes the following elements:
  1. A workable research-question,
  2. A tentative structure of your paper, which contains the steps which you will take to answer the question, and
  3. Your main references.

To meet this goal, you will receive basic training in organizing a philosophical research project (including literature research, taking and organizing notes, and academic writing).

A supervisor will be assigned to each student based on the topic of the paper or the chosen approach. We will offer group sessions as well as individual meetings. The final meeting will be dedicated to a presentation of all outlines for all participants.

The preparatory phase will be directed by Jan Hoogland, Michael Nagenborg, and Nils Wagner. It contains group sessions and supervision meetings. A guideline for writing a (short) thesis will be available at the beginning of the course.
