Aims
Students can explain the electrical functioning of diodes and MOSFETS by applying the underlying physics models.

After this course the student:
  1. understands the concept “depletion approximation” and charge conservation
  2. is able to apply Gauss’s law for determining the electric field/potential
  3. understands the formation of the pn-junction diode and MOS capacitor at thermal equilibrium
  4. understands the rectifying behavior of the pn-junction diode
  5. is able to model the electrical characteristics of the pn-junction diode and MOSFET in steady state condition and during switching
  6. understands the concept of threshold voltage and built-in voltage
  7. knows the concept heterojunctions
  8. understands the notion of contact resistance
  9. recognizes the different aspects of “transistor performance”
  10. relates physical dimensions to transistor action
  11. recognizes physical limitations in the transistor architecture
  12. has a basic notion of the IC technology and development
Content
This course treats the physics of the basic semiconductor devices: the pn-junction diode and the MOSFET. First, the electrostatics of both devices will be explained. Then the functionality and operation of both devices will be treated.
