Cursusdoelen
Students should know why semiconductor components are being successfully applied in the field of electronics. They should understand how and why the electrical behaviour of various components are modelled.
After this course the student:
1. understands the concept “depletion approximation” and charge conservation
2. understands Gauss’s law for determining the electric field/potential
3. understands the formation of the pn-junction diode and MOS capacitor at thermal equilibrium
4. understands the rectifying behavior of the pn-junction diode
5. is able to model the electrical characteristics of the pn-junction diode and MOSFET in steady state condition and during switching (transients, small/large signal)
6. understands the concept of threshold voltage and built-in voltage
7. knows the concept heterojunctions
8. understand the notion of contact resistance
9. recognizes the different aspects of “transistor performance”
10. understands the relation between physical dimensions and transistor action
11. recognizes physical limitations in the transistor architecture
12. has a basic notion of the IC technology and development
Inhoud
This course treats the physics of the basic semiconductor devices: the pn-junction diode and the MOSFET. First, the electrostatics of both devices will be explained. Then the functionality and operation of both devices will be treated.
