Cursusdoelen
Students must know what is a semiconductor and understand the physics behind it.
After this course the student:
1. has a general notion of charge carrier transport through metals and semiconductors
2. understands the concept of energy band diagram and its importance for devices
3. understands the drift-diffusion equations
4. knows the concept “thermal equilibrium”
5. recognizes the Fermi-Dirac statistics
6. has a general notion of the Boltzmann relations and the mass-action law
7. recognizes the Einstein relation
8. has the general notion of the concept of recombination/generation
9. understands the energy-exchange and momentum-exchange when systems are out of equilibrium.
Inhoud
This course will treat the introduction to semiconductor physics. First, basic quantum-mechanics will be treated after which basic properties of semiconductors will be introduced, such as the bandgap and effective mass. Band diagrams will be described and then various important transport phenomena such as drift, diffusion, recombination and generation will be discussed.
