Module consists of the study units
This module consists of several study units, every part has its own learning objectives. The study units are:

202000979 Smart Technology
202000980 Smart Technology Core
202000981 Sensors
202000982 Literature Research Project
202000983 Professional Development
Module description
This module and its counterpart (Module 5b: Interactive Media) are so called “Tool” modules. In order for the CreaTe student to exert his profession some fundamental knowledge of frequently used tools is necessary. The Smart Technology module focuses on providing such tools on an academic basis. The focus in this module is on physical (mostly electrical or mechanical) systems like electronics, sensors, controlled systems and the interfacing of such systems to the digital world. In addition, signal descriptions/modifications/conversions in time and frequency domain play an important role. The treatment of some of the underlying (physical) principles governing such systems will go hand in hand with the more abstract treatment on the system level. Practical (lab) skills in al the core courses will play an important role to provide the link between theory and application. In addition, this module contains an individual literature research project which provides the student the opportunity to follow his fascination in technology and deepen his knowledge on smart technology.
With the introduction of Twente Onderwijs Model (TOM) version 2 the overarching structure of the module will change at the beginning of 2020 – 2021.
  • The Smart Technology core (9.5EC) consists of 4 topics, i.e. the core topics Circuits & Electronics and Modeling & Control are central in the module. These courses are supported by the topic Systems and Signals - the necessary mathematics for understanding signals and modelling dynamic behaviour. Finally, at the end of the module everything comes together in the Smart Tech Hackathon, a 3-day project/event. The Hackathon is a creative group project in a pressure-cooker setting aimed at integrating and grounding the content from the core courses in one design.
  • Closely linked and in coherent relation to the Smart Tech core and the Hackathon is the course Sensors (3EC) which deals with physical sensors from both theoretical and practical viewpoints.
  • Next to the Smart Tech related courses there is a literature research project (2EC) focusing on (academic) writing skills and desktop-research. This can be executed via the study of a Smart Tech related subject.
  • Finally, the course Professional Development (0.5EC) will continue in year 2 (present in all modules 1 through 8) and will complete the courses within this module.

Manual enrollment via Osiris is only for Creative Technology students.

Enrolment is open to students from other bachelor programmes if they are allowed to follow the module as a minor/exchange programme. Note that the Smart Tech module and its courses are not open for students from all study directions! Check the entry rules at the minor office for the most recent entry requirements. If you want to enroll, please contact K. Zalewska (k.zalewska-kurek@utwente.nl).
