Course goals
  • Explain, from a philosophical perspective, what scientific research looks like, how problems are solved in chemistry, the role of models in chemical engineering, and how we evaluate a problem solution in chemical engineering.
  • Explain concepts: code of conduct, whistle-blowing, dispersed responsibility and the three main theories (utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics). Use the ethical cycle in analysing an ethical problem in a systematic way.
  • Find a bachelor project related to own interests and skills, formulate the research plan including research question, research set up, research techniques and research planning. Reflect on the process of writing and presenting.
  • Be able to apply basic statistics on experimental data.
  • Elective course: see Osiris info of that specific study unit.
You can choose one of the 5-EC elective courses in the table. Make sure to check if specific entry requirements or recommendations are in place for your elective course.
In case you wish to follow an alternative course that is not in the table above, you can request permission at the CSE Examination board.
Course content

In module 1-8 of the CSE programme students gained domain-specific knowledge in the different subfields of Chemical Engineering, and applied this knowledge in projects using several design and research techniques. Module 11 covers a broad range of topics and skills needed in learning to deal with issues ranging from how to actually do scientific research in chemical engineering, to several of the broader societal aspects of chemical engineering. In addition, students will deepen their knowledge on Statistics and can choose an elective course.
