Electrochemistry, a derivative of equilibrium thermodynamics, is at the basis of separation techniques and reactions that apply electrical fields. Knowledge of electrochemistry is essential in the understanding and design of systems for energy conversion and storage, such as batteries, fuel cells and electrolysis for hydrogen production. The revival of electrochemistry is caused by the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and the abundancy of electricity. Thus, electrochemistry is predicted to have growing applications amongst others in chemical industry. The Lab course Electrochemistry will bring the gained theoretical knowledge into practice by performing a number of experiments. The Project Electrochemistry deals with the conceptual modelling of the experimental data and observations from the practicum experiments. The project involves tackling a scientific electrochemical problem by a small team of students, with the aim of improving their level of academic thinking: by combining observations, theoretical foundations and mathematical formulas, the identification of (implicit) assumptions and simplifications made, and the relationships between experimental observables, measurements and theoretical frameworks, an overarching description of the investigated electrochemical processes will be constructed
