Modulebeschrijving
Central to this module are the concepts of thermodynamics, within the framework of industrial chemical process engineering. The objective is to provide insight in the connection between various basic elements of a chemical process, in which raw materials are transformed into products. In order to gain this insight, various (new) skills are required. These skills are offered through three distinct module components:
  • Calculus 1B
  • Thermodynamics
  • Process Engineering (including Project)
  • Practical

Module learning goals:

  • Work with limits, definitions of continuity and differentiability and applications, elementary properties of integrals and calculate integrals using different techniques, power series, and Taylor series
  • Investigate functions in two variables and can apply partial differentiation
  • Design a rudimentary scheme for an industrial chemical process involving a recycle stream, a reactor, and one or more molecular separation unit operations
  • Develop the mass and energy balances for (non)reactive chemical processes and unit operations, including using the McCabe-Thiele theory for the design of a distillation column, to quantify the streams in the rudimentary process design
  • Explain and apply the first and second laws of thermodynamics
  • Explain the thermodynamic concepts: ideal and real gas, Van der Waals equation, triple & critical points in PV/PT plots, specific heat cp and cv, enthalpy & internal energy
  • Derive thermodynamic identities (e.g., dU, dH, dG, en dF) and determine changes in Gibbs and Helmholtz free energies.
  • Explain research methodology and apply this to a chemical experiment, use a lab journal, select and use the appropriate technical equipment, and apply error analysis.
