Aims
After passing this module part the student;
  • Understand how and why Quantum Mechanics evolved, from a historical point of view,
  • Recognize and understand the Copenhagen interpretation of Quantum Mechanics,
  • Use the Schrödinger equation to solve problems, such as: the particle in a box, tunneling, atoms and chemical binding,
  • Recognize and understand the connection between the concepts of Quantum Mechanics and a few examples of applications in modern science and technology,
  • Make and present a poster on a given topic, and discuss findings
Content
The basic elements of quantum mechanics will be introduced using a series of examples from modern physics. The following topics will be addressed: duality of particles, diffraction, photo-electric effect, uncertainty relation of Heisenberg, Schrödinger equation, quantum mechanical particle in a box, atoms and molecules, free electron model, band theory of solids, semiconductors and superconductors. After the more intuitive approach, a start will be made with a more formal description of quantum mechanics.

Assessment Plan
The assessment plan for this course will be published no later than 2 weeks before the starting block of the course on https://www.utwente.nl/nl/tn/onderwijs/toetsschemas/
