Module description
The design of silicon based micromechanical and micro/nanofluidic devices and systems with an emphasis on their functionality are addressed in this module. A major part of the course is the design lab in which the students design and test a device of their own choice which is realized in a foundry process offered by the MCS/TST group. 
In the Transducers part of the module, the main principles used in transducers (sensors and actuators) design are explained.  In this part four major assignments are used to cover the learning aims.  In the Design validation with FEM part the student will use a finite element calculation based on a commercial package like COMSOL to address a multi-domain, electro-mechanical problem.  Next, a finite element simulation will be carried out addressing a key part of the device design for the MEMS Design project.
In the BSc preparation part the student will search for a BSc assignment and write the concept of the first chapter of the BSc thesis which addresses what, why and how this research will be done.
