The main focus of the Pre-master Research Practical lies on scientific reporting. Knowledge will be acquired on the several elements of a scientific report, the coherence between those elements and the APA-standards a report has to meet. Furthermore, attention is paid to the most important research designs in psychology. This theoretical knowledge will be applied in two separate assignments, that both will be written as several sections of a scientific report.
The individual assignments are focused on respectively quantitative and qualitative research, both relevant for the domain of psychology. In the quantitative assignment, the main topic is the assessment of the qualities of a questionnaire with closed questions, and the qualitative assignment focuses on the systematic analysis of answers to an open question. In the first, quantitative assignment the student will critically evaluate the questionnaire by conducting statistical analyses with SPSS in order to make substantiated statements on the reliability and validity of this questionnaire. During the second, qualitative assignment, the student learns how to systematically code qualitative data, in this case from an open question from the questionnaire also used in the first assignment. In order to achieve this, the student will use the program Atlas.ti and he/she will also learn how to report these results in a scientific, clear way. Both assignments will be written as a method, results and conclusion section from a scientific report, applying the previously acquired knowledge.
The course will be concluded with an exam that contains both open and multiple choice questions. These will not only test knowledge on and insight in the subject matter, but also reflection on the results of the conducted analyses in both assignments.
