Aims
At the end of the course:
  1. students will be able to recognize and differentiate between the basic areas of Psychology and apply this to examples.
  2. students will be able to differentiate between concepts of the scientific method of Psychology and apply these to examples.
  3. students will be able to name and recognize theories and scientific insights in respect of the genetic and evolutionary basis for behaviour and apply these to examples.
  4. students will be able to name and recognize theories and scientific insights in respect of sensation and perception and apply these to examples.
  5. students will be able to name and recognize theories and scientific insights in respect of learning and apply these to examples.
  6. students will be able to name and recognize theories and scientific insights in respect of memory and apply these to examples.
  7. students will be able to name and recognize theories and scientific insights in respect of knowledge representation, reasoning, decision-making and problem solving and apply these to examples.
  8. students will be able to name and recognize theories and scientific insights in respect of language and apply these to examples.

Content
This course represents an initial introduction to Psychology. Psychology is a scientific discipline in the study of human behaviour.
It includes the following subjects: Research Methods of the discipline, the biological basis of behaviour, theories in respect of learning, memory, sensation and perception, consciousness, cognitive processes (for example, reasoning), language, social and cognitive development, social cognition, influence and relationships, motivation and emotions, personality and intelligence. The most important theories and insights that Psychology has produced in these areas are discussed.
These subjects relate to the basic areas of Psychology that are expanded upon in other subjects in the Psychology educational programme, namely Biological Psychology, Cognitive/Experimental Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Personality Psychology and test theory.

The course requires students to study the content by themselves by means of the book and a series of video lectures. In addition, live contact moments are offered (check the Canvas page or schedule for a current overview).
