Aims
Transportation: after successful completion of this part, the student is able to:
  • explain the role of transportation in a supply chain and choose a transportation mode to be used based on its pros and cons
  • formulate and solve the vehicle routing problem and the travelling salesman problem in a single source multiple destinations case using heuristic methods

Sourcing: after successful completion of this part, the student is able to:
  • comprehend and illustrate the purchasing function from various angles
  • make well-founded procurement decisions on: portfolio analysis, spend analysis, purchasing strategy, and supplier selection

Supply chain network design (SCND): after successful completion of this part, the student is able to:
  • identify the key factors in the distribution network design and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of various distribution options
  • design a distribution network using quantitative models
Content
Sourcing decisions in a supply chain
  • Portfolio analysis
  • Procurement process including supplier selection

Supply chain network design (SCDN)
  • Design of distribution networks starting from the manufacturer to end customers.
  • Network design models: facility location and (restricted/unrestricted) capacity, uncertainty, multi-echelon

Designing and Planning Transportation Networks
  • Transportation: models, design options, and trade-offs of various designs.
  • Routing problems such as vehicle routing and travelling salesman problems.
Assumed previous knowledge
LP, ILP, and MILP, EOQ (Operations managements in Module 2)
