At the end of the course the student is able to
  • present independently and in a convincing way about research findings;
RESTS:
At the end of the course the student is able to
  • identify ethical challenges of new and upcoming technology
  • describe these challenges in a well-structured essay
  • give and receive peer feedback on an essay about an ethical topic.

 
Inhoud

Skills:
Students will receive training in presenting research findings and are able to practice this. It is assessed by and provided with feedback from their Skills teachers. They will also learn key pointers on giving peer feedback. They will use this in the PAD RESTS assignment.
RESTS:
In this course Peter Paul Verbeek gives a first introduction into Ethics and Philosophy of Technology. He introduces exemplary ethical challenges of current and upcoming technologies in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management, like artificial intelligence, drones, self-driving cars, and human enhancement technologies. Furthermore, some central ethical theories and approaches to analyse and address them are discussed in the lectures.
Also, he explains how to write a brief, well-structured and well-argued essay (of appr. 2A4) about a concrete ethical issue regarding one of these technologies.  
Assignment: Essay on an ethical challenge regarding a technological development in the IEM field.
