The Philosophy study unit will take a closer look at various underlying fundamental issues in psychology and in our understanding of the mind more generally. Those issues cover psychological methodology, basic concepts, knowledge claims (epistemology), and even the very nature of the mind and mental processes (what philosophers call “metaphysics” or “ontology”). Questions that will be addressed include: What is the mind-body problem? Does free will exist? Why is the concept of mental disorder epistemically, socially and politically controversial?
