Research methods
The student has knowledge and insight into a number of different psychological research methods and their associated analytical techniques. The student is specifically able to:
  1. explain the purpose and operation of the most important quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques in relation to the research methods taught
  2. describe the high tech equipment most commonly used in the BMSlab (e.g. eyetracking, VR) and explain the benefits and downsides of these and other mentioned technologies have to conduct psychological research
  3. make a reasoned choice from the research methods taught when designing and evaluating (technological) interventions
  4. design an analysis plan and explain why this plan is the best course of action
  5. explain best practices in writing up research reports and apply style guidelines to these reports (APA)
  6. explain best practices in oral presentations of research results

In this part of the module several specific research methods and –techniques will be elaborated upon, which are considered increasingly important in the research domain of psychology and for the design and evaluation of (technological) interventions, such as:
  1. Qualitative research: different methods for analysing products and interventions in psychology in a qualitative manner, with the emphasis on identity analysis as an element of idiographic-based mixed-method research .
  2. Experimental design and linear models: in the context of the evaluation of causal processes and interventions and their underlying mechanisms. Including: randomized controlled trials (RCT), moderation and mediation analyses, planned comparisons.
  3. Poisson regression: in the context of analysing count data (e.g. number of days without rain during one year; number of patients with depression in one month), of which the residuals are often not normally distributed.
  4. Social network analysis: methods for investigating social structures through the use of networks.
  5. Information literacy: in the context of determining the nature and extent of information needed, accessing information effectively and efficiently, evaluating information and resources and lastly integration of information.  
Each specific research method/technique is discussed and illustrated by methodological experts in lectures using appealing psychological research performed at UT. This knowledge of the basic principles and applications of each method acquired in the lectures is converted into skills in practicals. Using existing cases and data sets students acquire skills in these practical sessions to be able to use each research method in practice. The lectures and practicals related to these methods and techniques serve as preparation for data collection and analysis in the research project, and for the Bachelor thesis in year three.

At least 45 EC of the first year’s modules (B1) have been obtained AND 3 out of 4 Research Methods study units of B1 have been finished
