After successful completion of the project/study unit ‘Ehealth applied to chronic illness’ the student is able to:
  • apply and combine knowledge and skills from the lines Health psychology and Persuasive health technology to design a lofi prototype for an ehealth  mini-intervention for people with chronic illness (arthritis, diabetes mellitus or asthma/COPD)
  • apply the two design models ASCE and CeHRes Roadmap
  • involve end-users (here patients with a chronic disease) in a respectful and effective way in the development of the mini-intervention.
  • perform a problem and contextual analysis in order to identify goal and behavioural change techniques of the intervention and to define the target group
  • create personas, use case scenarios  and requirements to match intervention goals and technology choice
  • design a lofi prototype for the mini-intervention where behavioural change techniques and persuasive elements are integrated
  • plan, carry out and report the formative evaluation of the developed lofi prototype with end-users
  • present the essence of your product  in a powerful, promoting and persuasive way

In the project of this module you will choose one chronic disease and summarise health psychology knowledge about this disease.
Think about for example (1) the prevalence of the disease, (2) the risk groups for this disease, (3) how the disease is treated, (4) which main problems patients face in the course of the disease, (5) which consequences for quality of life are known, and (6) which behaviour change challenges might benefit from support by an eHealth intervention. To deepen your understanding, you will further familiarise with the context in which your eHealth intervention should be finally implemented by talking to relevant key-stakeholders. Consequently, you come up with a definition of the goal and behavioural change methods for your mini-intervention and find the ideal match between intervention goal and form of technology by working with methodologies for User-Centred Design (UCD).  In the systematic design in the lo-fi prototype you will take into account the integration of behavioural change techniques with persuasive elements.
Your project ends with the formative evaluation of your design and a pitch for stakeholders to explain the added value of your mini-intervention. During the whole project you will (learn to) work with patients as partners in the design process. Throughout this process, you make sure that the perspective of the end-user is optimally taken into account in your design.

This study unit is part of the module Health Psychology & Applied Technology (202000340). A module is offered as one educational unity and students take it as such.
At least 9 EC of module 1 have been obtained OR at least 21 EC of modules 1 and 2 have been obtained. This prerequisite applies to all three study units within this module.
