Aims
At the end of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Take a reasoned decision as to what method of data collection to use (observation, interviews, questionnaires or content analysis), and substantiate their decision with arguments.
  2. Name various interviewing techniques and explain when they can or cannot be applied.
  3. Calculate interrater reliability (measures of agreement, Cohen’s kappa).
  4. Name and discuss various types of sampling.
  5. List basic rules for designing a valid questionnaire study.
  6. Apply the general principles of designing and scoring tests, also assessing their quality..
  7. Assess the quality and dimensionality of a scale or test by means of factor analysis, classical test theory, and item-response theory.
Content
This Research Methods study unit is part of the module The Individual (202000334).
In this module, you will learn how measurement of constructs is used in both research and individual assessment. You will learn how to use various ways of collecting data (e.g. observation, interviews, questionnaires, and content analysis). Specific attention will be given to constructing interview schedules and tests.
A further focus will be on examining the validity and reliability of the measurement instruments that can be used to collect data. Assessing data to look at the quality and dimensionality of a scale or test (using factor analysis, classical test theory, and item response theory) will be practiced using the statistical program R. Your newly acquired knowledge and skills will be applied in this module’s project.
