This Theory study unit is part of the module The Individual (202000334).
The theoretical component covers concepts of clinical and personality psychology. In the unit Clinical Psychology, we will discuss the three classic approaches in this discipline: the psychodynamic approach, the person-centred approach, and the cognitive behavioural approach. A separate topic will be the client-therapist relationship. The various approaches and their relations with technology-supported interventions and measurement will be discussed in lectures.
In the unit Personality Theory, we will discuss the model of the Big Five personality traits and their development over the lifespan. This approach focuses on the biological background of individual differences between people and their consequences for behaviour. It mainly uses psychological tests to assess individual differences. We will also discuss a more recent approach of personality theory: narrative psychology. This approach builds on concepts of self and motives. It advocates a more personal approach, studying in interviews and everyday life how people use stories to develop their identities within their own socio-cultural contexts. Both approaches will be applied in the project of this module.
