Aims
Students are familiar with the rules of scientific reporting on a cognitive scientific experiment. In addition, they are familiar with the fundamental concepts and methodologies of user-centred design. Students are able to:
  • describe in a report, and explain verbally, how they developed a low fidelity (non or minimal interactive) design, in which they support their choices with a simple heuristic evaluation, a usability test and cognitive psychological theory.
  • write the introduction, methodology, results and discussion section of a psychological experiment (replication) and explain this verbally.

Content
Students complete the project in the Design & Research study unit. In the module 3 project, students practice conducting and reporting on controlled experiments for the first time. Students build upon the data analysis (descriptive and/or inferential) techniques and theories they learned in both the previous and current modules to carry out the evaluation. In addition, students continue developing design skills and they learn about activities such as requirement specification and low-fidelity prototypes.

In the Theory component, students learn a great deal about the experiments used to examine cognitive functions. While working on the project, students also replicate an experiment with the aid of Qualtrics (https://utwentebs.eu.qualtrics.com). Students can apply the evaluative statistics they dealt with in the Research Methods component(s) to analyse this data.
