Aims
At the end of the module, students will be able to:
  • recognize and distinguish between the various activities in the context of empirical research, including formulating a research question, selecting a research design, differentiating between data collection methods and some first steps in data analysis ;
  • formulate a clear descriptive or explanatory research question, including units and (a) variable(s);
  • Identify and comprehend the implications of a causal statement (correlation, time order and the absence of a third variable);
  • identify different types of research designs for answering explanatory (causal) questions, including correlational, quasi-experimental and experimental research designs and to use criteria like internal and external validity to assess these designs.
  • Identify different types of data collection methods or measurement instruments
  • calculate some descriptive statistics (incl. measures of central tendency and variability) and create simple charts and tables using the statistical program R.
  • understand the general idea of sampling and inferential statistics.
