Psychology is a scientific discipline in the study of human behaviour. The course covers the following subjects: Research methods of the discipline, the biological basis of behaviour, and theories in respect of learning, memory, sensation and perception, consciousness, cognitive processes (for example, reasoning), language, social and cognitive development, social cognition, influence and relationships, motivation and emotions, personality, and intelligence. The most important theories and insights that Psychology has produced in these areas are discussed. The subjects relate to the basic areas of Psychology that are expanded upon in other subjects in the Psychology educational programme, namely Biological Psychology, Cognitive/Experimental Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Personality Psychology and test theory. In this study unit you'll create the 'back-bone' of your psychology knowledge. What you learn during this study unit is meant to support knowledge acquisition and application throughout your further studies and career. Hence, the content of this course is mainly theoretical. The approaches in this course align with that goal: study of book, lectures & MC examination of theory, concepts, and insights. You’ll familiarize yourself with the history, and fundamental concepts and theories of psychology by studying the book. Lectures are there to provide contextualized insight via additional (contemporary) examples and explanations for a selection of the content.
