This study unit is part of the module Psychology and Intervention Design (202000320) and provides an initial introduction to psychology. Psychology is a scientific discipline in the study of human behaviour. The course covers the following subjects: Research methods of the discipline, the biological basis of behaviour, and theories in respect of learning, memory, sensation and perception, consciousness, cognitive processes (for example, reasoning), language, social and cognitive development, social cognition, influence and relationships, motivation and emotions, personality, and intelligence. The most important theories and insights that Psychology has produced in these areas are discussed. The subjects relate to the basic areas of Psychology that are expanded upon in other subjects in the Psychology educational programme, namely Biological Psychology, Cognitive/Experimental Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Personality Psychology and test theory.
