At the end of the study unit, students will be able to… (between brackets the number of the corresponding intended learning qualification of the programme):
  1. explain the concepts of big data and data analytics (2.1);
  2. acquire skills in applying big data analytics in media analysis (2.2, 2.3, 2.4);
  3. describe various algorithms for big data analytics (2.1, 2.3);
  4. use existing software packages for data mining (2.4)
To understand the sentiment among the general public regarding their innovation, students are introduced to big data analytics. A wealth of information is available from websites, forums, and social media. Big data analytics are increasingly being applied to combine data from various sources, to represent the outcomes graphically, and to generate new knowledge about individuals based on publicly available information. Knowledge about the practice and potential of big data analytics will enable the students to learn how relevant stakeholders and journalists discuss the innovation in the public discourse. Students will study and apply the methods and the software that are available for analysing online information. Examples of the use of big data analytics will be studied and the strengths and weaknesses of the methods used will be discussed. The acquired knowledge and insights will be used in the Project and furthermore tested through an individual assignment (Challenge 3R1).

This study unit is part of the Communication science module The innovation journey. Because the four study units, which are part of the module, are highly related to each other it is not possible to follow this study unit separately.
