At the end of the study unit, students will be able to…:
(between brackets the number of the corresponding intended learning qualification of the programme)
- formulate a research question relating to specific media use and effects that can be answered with survey research (2.2, 6.1);
- perform a literature review and compose a theoretical framework in line with a specific research question (2.2, 2.3);
- design and perform survey research on media use to answer a research question (2.4);
- analyze and report on survey research, drawing conclusions that relate to a specific research question (2.5, 5.2);
- present findings from their study concisely in an academic conference setting (2.6);
- perform research activities in a group (4.6, 4.7);

Students take the role of media researchers working to provide input for a policy debate through a quantitative study. Following a research theme of their interest, students perform each of the basic steps of the scientific process: gathering literature and composing a theoretical framework, designing and performing a (survey) study, analyzing the data, and reporting on the study in written and oral forms. The themes for this project are related to the Theory line of the module, including different facets of media psychology.
This study unit is part of the module Understanding media. Because the four study units, which are part of the module, are highly related to each other it is not possible to follow this study unit separately.
