At the end of the study unit, students will be able to… (between brackets the number of the corresponding intended learning outcomes of the programme):
- analyse and describe a global challenge by means of communication science theories, models, and concepts (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 5.2, 6.1, 6.3);
- develop a popular content strategy to effectively approach a global challenge by means of communication science theories, and to create content that popularizes the global challenge (3.6, 4.1, 4.5);
- operate effectively in a project team and to evaluate the effectiveness of the project team and one’s own role(s) within the team; create cultural self-awareness (4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9, 6.2).
In this study unit, students take the role of a content strategist and develop a popular content strategy in small project groups. The topic of this content strategy is related to one of the UN global sustainable development goals. To begin with, students learn how to manage their own projects, as well as collaborating in intercultural teams. These project management skills are important to effectively work together with fellow students. Students will apply the insights they acquired in the study unit Theory by analysing one of the global challenges from different theoretical perspectives, and they will use the communication theories to tackle the challenge and create a group content strategy report (1P1).|
The report has to be written according to the guidelines that have been taught in the Professional Writing Skills course. This content strategy forms the input for the second group assignment: a popular content type (1P2) that popularises the global challenge. The content created in 1P2 needs to include a visualization of the global challenge based on the lessons learned in the Design Skills course, as well as a visualization of data based on techniques learned the Research study unit. This underlines the link between the Project, Theory, Research, and Skills. While working on the project, students also practice with giving and receiving feedback, and they reflect on their experiences concerning group work in an intercultural context. At the end of the project, students individually reflect on their role in the project team (1P3).
This study unit is part of the Communication science module We connect society. Because the four courses, which are part of the module, are highly related to each other it is not possible to follow this study unit separately.
