At the end of the module, the trainee is able to:
- Describe the SE process and tools
- Describe and assess decisions in the early phase and the way they have an impact on e.g., performance, integration, and production
- Assess SE in terms of its ability to deal with uncertainty and the vast consequences of decisions in SE
- Apply a number of SE tools to the own case
System thinking
At the end of the module, the trainee is able to:
- Assess the importance of a system view
- Adopt, maintain, and use a system view
Societal embedding of designs
At the end of the module, the trainee is able to:
- Understand stakeholder dynamics around technologies and innovations
- Develop strategies for acquiring commitment of internal and external stakeholders
- Reflect on the PDEng project in relation to its societal context
Requirement engineering
At the end of the module, the trainee is able to:
- Assess the importance of requirements in full project life cycle, different layers, different levels
- Assess and apply methods to elicit requirements from both problem and solution domains
- Develop a well-defined set of requirements
System architecture
At the end of the module, the trainee is able to:
- Create a system architecture, and communicate that with diverse stakeholders
- Assess, and deal with the relation between technical system, business model and organization.
Model-based systems engineering
At the end of the module, the trainee is able to:
- Describe the key elements of MBSE
- Develop a (simple) model of system structure, behaviour, and dynamics
- Communicate the model, get feedback, and analyse it
Safety risk management
At the end of the module, the trainee is able to:
- Describe international and national regulations
- Describe and apply the system safety principles
- Apply risk assessment and management
Value engineering
- Describe the key VE principles
- Describe the key VE workshop steps and tools
- Develop a VE workshop plan to carry out the VE workshop
- Critically reflect on the circumstances under which VE is relevant
- Apply the VE plan to a real life project or fictitious case
Individual Assessment
- Assess the relevance of specific design science tools in relation to the PDEng project
- Apply specific design science tools to the PDEng project
Multidisciplinary group assignment
- Create a design solution using design science tools and working in a multidisciplinary peer group.
Track specific group assignment
- Create a design solution in his/her engineering discipline using design science tools and working in a peer group.

The course Design Science and Engineering for PDEng provides an overview of technological design science topics at the post-master level.
The course brings together PDEng trainees and academic staff from various technological design-oriented disciplines. A common underlying technological design approach is explicated in this course. In so doing, PDEng trainees are equipped with the state-of-the-art in design science. Depending on trainees’ backgrounds, the course partly offers a refresher on design science basics, as well as an introduction to more advanced topics.
At the end of the course, trainees should be able to organize and execute technological design projects, including their own PDEng project. In addition, trainees should be able to critically reflect on the societal consequences and relevance of their technological design research.
The course distinguishes between theoretical core and extension modules. Core modules address a minimum set of technological design science concepts and tools and encompass:

- System thinking
- Societal embedding of designs
- Requirement engineering
- System architecture
Extension modules cover additional tools that expand on and/or facilitate the core modules. Extension modules are:
- Model-based systems engineering
- Safety risk management
- Value engineering
